After her best friend dies in a school shooting, the teenaged daughter of Republican lawmakers risks her life to force the passage of an assault weapons ban.
(Super 8 x The Fallout)
Paige Pratt, 17, lacks self-confidence but has a bright future ahead of her. Top of her class at an elite prep school, great SAT scores, wealthy parents who can foot the bill for Yale.
But after her BFF is killed in a school shooting and her parents are seemingly unaffected, Paige is struck by the idea that one reason Congress won't pass an assault weapons ban is that lawmakers' children are never killed in these tragic events.

Convinced that the only way to get a ban enacted is to force her parents to change their votes on a pending gun control bill, Paige enlists her dramatic arts class to help stage a fake shooting. Meanwhile, a reporter chronicles a leak from one of the Pratt's offices that causes the NRA and gun lobby to shy away from bi-partisan compromise as the vote on the bill approaches.
The fake shooting goes off without a hitch -- until there's a hitch that nobody expects.
"Smokescreen" examines both sides of the gun control debate in a way that will leave audiences wondering about Paige's choices and the impact they do -- and don't -- have.
